The benefits of a yoga practice have been documented over the years. They include better breathe, balance and strength, but most importantly, a feeling of wellness and mindfulness.
As with any exercise, it is important to pay attention to your body and go at your own pace. River Flow Yoga recognizes this and we build on your practice for wherever your body may be today.
Water has a natural calming effect on our bodies. Some people feel this pull to the water stronger than others - be it to watersports, swimming, or just being beside the ocean.
It feels like we are at home when we step on the paddleboard, or dive into the lake.
Question...will I fall in?
You can only hope. 😉
Honestly I haven't lost anyone yet. The paddleboards we use are incredibly stable with yoga mat on the top or deck. You'll do only what you feel comfortable doing.
Lots of options are offered to make your time on the board relaxing.
Do I need to be flexible?
Do you know me? 😉
I obtained my 200 hour yoga teacher certification at 59 years young, so I think anyone interested will be absolutely fine on a SUP. I cue modifications and you only do what is available for you today, it's your body, your practice. Embrace it. ❤
How do we not float away?
Great question. We have anchors which fasten to the board., holding us in place.
Will I be intimidated by doing yoga on a paddle board?
The asanas or poses are modified for the board. SUP instructor and SUP yoga certification with Paddle into Fitness were hands-on educational classes to be SUP yoga certified.
Towards the end I offer the chance to challenge yourself. You can choose to or not.
Honestly, you'll love it.
What if I fall in?
Well.....you get wet.
Bad answer.
Seriously...we go to where, if you fall in, you can touch. Our Trent is very shallow outside of the boat channel.
I have water shoes with me, so I can hop off and help you back on board, if you need it. Part of the fun.
What should I wear?
Something comfy to move in, if you are comfortable in a bathing suit, great.
I wear capris or shorts, and a light t-shirt. Just be comfortable, and modest (we may do downward dog 😃). Workout wear is also suitable. During the day, definitely water friendly sunscreen.
Should I take sup lessons first?
Experience isn't necessary but certainly helps. If you let me know you are new to SUP, we can take some extra time getting you comfortable on the paddleboard.
If you would prefer, book a lesson with Mark or Heather at Campbellford Paddle - Paddlecraft outfitters, rentals, sales, lessons.
Otherwise I know we can get you paddling confidently to where we're going, whether it's standing, kneeling or sitting.
Just bring with you a love of being outside and a sense of adventure.
Can novice yoga practitioners join?
Absolutely!
